Mustatunturi returns to RP with the futurist-technoid KAAMOS (that's Finnish for "Polar Night"), a set of 10 tracks (the final three are disc-exclusives) that continue his explorations of sparse atmospheres anchored with classic techno and electro sensibilities. Lots of satisfying bleeps/bloops (or bleebs as Vainio may have called them) intertwined with a very "traditionalist" drum machine palette, bearing a bit more grittiness than the rhythms on the previous record, and many voices of synthesized bass, chords and leads that would not be out of place on a Polygon Window or Astrobotnia album. The whole of it comes together in an evocative way that both recalls pioneering works by RDJ, Atkins, Mills and of course the late Ø (although that last one could just be colored perception because of the Finnish connection - we do think it's a bit deeper than that...perhaps something in the air or water in Finland?) but it also feels fresh and renewed, despite using tools and sounds that are immediately somewhat familiar. Topically, Kaamos has more in common with the Lamont Kohner singles we've released, or some aspects of the Zwei Kreise and Screener36 releases, sure to delight listeners and pull them further into the future as we might yet know it.
