Following his retro-futuristic dub techno album Terrain Scan, Specta Ciera (known elsewhere as Devroka and half of Drexon Field) returns to Recycled Plastics with a new twelve-tracker, Nitelight, packed full of rubbery synth basslines, funky electro rhythms and rainbow-chroma hooks, virtually tumbling out of the speakers like a giftbox full of melodies. This new album invokes/evokes a whole lot of interesting cornerstones from the last fifty years of electronic music - shades of Kraftwerk, Juan Atkins and Drexciya rub shoulders with chiptune bubbles that come spraying out of a champagne bottle at a Jan Hammer boat party in Miami...wriggling monosynth lines squirm and splash in the bright blue seawater, which washes up on the shores of Clear-era Metamatics 12"s and Shibuya-kei neon coastlines dotted with Cornelius clubs and YMO arcades. Truly, these tracks recall other RP catalog moments like Sint's Zonmist, 101's (Para)Normal Life and both Cybertron releases, as well as the starry-eyed pop compositions of Mrs Jynx, NN* and Foamek, arriving right on time for the cool and invigorating nights that creep in with the Autumn, just when you thought Summer burnout had you bummed.
