Grand Canyon Spring Breaks debuts at RP with the excellent bedroom odyssey Desert Trax. GCSB is a man of many names, we know him as Hugo, but some of you may know him as the mind behind Ravadiscs in France. The hardware-led tangents and tape warmth present on excellent releases like Aqualog and Atlantic Technologies are all present here, with twelve tracks created live using the Ensoniq Mirage eight-bit sampler from 1985, recorded in mono direct to an Akai tape machine with no overdubs (but a good bit of editing to tighten things up in post). Musically, Desert Trax recalls a lot of our favorite moments from labels like Rephlex, Spymania, Clear and Skam - the sort of classic heyday of bedroom electronicists with their machines all sprawled out on a dingy carpet, wires everywhere, plinking and plonking their way through handmade futurism, one sequencer step at a time. It retains all of the rugged and raw elemental aspects of having come from a single live take on only one low-bitrate machine, but to our ears, feels all the more comfortable and authentic for it. Hugo sent music to the RP PO box years earlier, and due to a comedy of errors, where his work went to the wrong address after we relocated, it took a little while to connect...but, we finally aligned our signal paths and are happily able to now bring some of his excellent recordings to your ears. We might be inclined to say "Better late than never" if the music didn't sound so timeless and interesting, and Desert Trax is right on time for what our ears need to hear at the end of a long and exhausting year.
